This\r\nterm can cause confusion. It may be used to describe a sensor which measures\r\npressures below atmospheric pressure, showing the difference between the low\r\npressure and atmospheric pressure (i.e. negative gauge pressure), but it may\r\nalso be used to describe a sensor that measures low pressure relative to\r\nperfect vacuum (i.e. absolute pressure).

Differential pressure sensor

\r\n

This\r\nsensor measures the difference between two pressures, each one connected to different\r\nside of the sensor. Differential pressure sensors are used to measure many\r\nproperties, such as pressure drops across oil filters or air filters, fluid\r\nlevels (by comparing the pressure above and below the liquid) or flow rates (by\r\nmeasuring the changes in pressure across a restriction). Technically speaking,\r\nmost pressure sensors are really different for example a gauge pressure sensor\r\nis merely a differential pressure sensor that each one’s side is open to the\r\nambient atmosphere.

Piezoresistive strain gauge

\r\n

Uses the piezoresistive effect of bonded or\r\nformed strain gauges to detect strain due to applied pressure. Common\r\ntechnology types are Silicon (Monocrystalline), Polysilicon Thin Film, Bonded\r\nMetal Foil, Thick Film, and Sputtered Thin Film. Generally, the strain gauges\r\nare connected to form a Wheatstone bridge circuit to maximize the output of the\r\nsensor to reduce sensitivity to errors. This is the most commonly employed sensing\r\ntechnology for general purpose pressure measurement. Generally, these\r\ntechnologies are suited to measure absolute, gauge, vacuum, and differential\r\npressures.

Capacitive

\r\n

Uses a diaphragm for pressure cavity to\r\ncreate a variable capacitor to detect strain due to applied pressure. Common\r\ntechnologies use metal, ceramic, and silicon diaphragms. Generally, these\r\ntechnologies are most applied to low pressures (Absolute, Differential and\r\nGauge)
